Both make good points. One reason our services have been "commoditized" is because many clients see them as such, and we haven't done much to discourage that. Even local firms, where relationships used to be key, have become product mills. Talk about collaboration and technology is great. But what are the issues we face in getting there? Ethical restraints, independence, non traditional services, new billing paradigms, firm size, delegation of work to faceless, nameless staff...these are some of the discussions I would like to see. What about collaboration among practitioners similar to the way physicians refer among specialties? I don't know the answers, but I feel that they are out there. Products only help facilitate collaboration, people make it possible, ~ Wiley Kendrick (10/10/2006)

NOT GOING THEREI THE WORLD I LIVE IN MOST OF MY CLIENTS STILL DO NOT EVEN OWN A COMPUTER. SO TO INTERFACE WITH THEM IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I FEEL AS WE ALL MUST THAT WE NEED TO STEP BACK AN POLISH WHAT WE HAVE FIRST AND BECOME NORE SELECTIVE IN THE PERSONS WE WORK WITH FIRST AND THE PROGRAMS WE WORK WITH. HAVING MORE CHOICES JUST MAKES IT THAT MUCH HARDER.~ CARLA ESTRADA (9/17/2006)

I see things differently than David. We accountants missed the oppertunities in the past not realizing what was coming. Don't make the same mistake again. Our ability to collaborate with our clients will be the next big thing for us. I commend AccountantsWorld for having the foresight to create services that let accountants and their clients take advantage of this new capability we never had before. I don't care about what the members like David think, I am all for it. ~ Amy Abbott (8/15/2006)

I haven't missed the point at all.My point is that the 6-18-06 essay is nearly identical to the 7-31-05 essay and neither should have been presented under the title "Issues and Answers". The ealier version elicited but a handful of postings and this version but one, until I posted my objection to presenting an infomercial as editorial content.
There are issues and answers worthy of this forum but unless AccountantsWorld discontinues its use of this space as a tool for marketing its services, and learns to trust its members and actively seek their input for meaningful issues that, when presented here, will elicit a substantive, heartfelt response, this so-called forum will remain nearly useless. And it won't be long before the membership migrates elsewhere on the web to get what we need.~ David Haffey (7/15/2006)

David Haffy has missed the pointDr. Bhansali has brought out a very important point. The Internet has given us one very important thing--the ability to collaborate with our clients. Mr. Haffy has missed the main point and is simply nitpicking. I have read both the issues and answers. While there is some overlap to bring out the importance of the Internet, the focus of both the Issues and Answers is different.
I concur with Chandra that the client collaboration is a powerful gift of the Internet. ~ Andy Como (7/5/2006)

Wasn't this same Issue and Answer presented in July 2005?Have we really run so short of issues that we are re-cycling one from less than a year ago? Why not open this forum up to guest authors who can introduce some fresh ideas?~ David Haffey (6/30/2006)

Accountant's Use of the 'NetYou are correct with your assertion that while Accountant's are becoming more and more technologically savvy, they are not taking full advantage of the technology and it is not until we promote our service across the digital divide that we become masters of our own fate.
While many Accountants remain aware of financial software tools that enable users to jointly work from remote locations and hold online meetings with multiple end users, I think that the mysteries of Internet promotion remain hidden.
Perhaps your article can remind us accountants of advantages of the internet to include providing our services across oceans as easily as providing the service to our next door neighbor.
Thank you.~ George Carter (6/29/2006)
